‘We love you. We miss you. We hate money’- Ultrakill and Gloomwood publisher New Blood Interactive turns a billboard into a grave marker for fallen studios including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin-

It’s been a rough couple of years for the games industry—and even laying it out like that feels like an understatement. Back in February, the number of layoffs and studio closures were already numerous enough to fit into a horrifying chart, and things haven’t exactly slowed down since.

One of the more high-profile recent shocks came from Microsoft, which shut down studios Arkane Austin—developers of Prey and Dishonoured—as well as Tango Gameworks, the studio behind surprise hit Hi-Fi Rush.

It was an especially messed-up situation because, as plenty of developers noted in the aftermath: A studio probably shouldn’t sink after a single flop like Redfall, but even if they do make an excellent game, that still won’t save them from the margin-fuelled manoeuvres of executives who can’t seem to put a straight answer together that justifies putting hundreds out of work.

To commemorate some of the recent losses, New Blood Interactive—the publ…

Valve politely asks that you only use Steam’s family sharing for ‘close family members’ in a ‘household,’ but let’s be real- everyone shares their games with Discord friends

Steam’s latest family sharing system, just called Steam Families, comes with lots of rules designed to keep it from turning into a game lending free-for-all. Year-long cooldown periods prevent us from joining and leaving Steam Family groups as often as we want, for example.

I get it: Valve has to walk a line between making users happy and keeping game developers from worrying that they’re losing sales to a bunch of little lending libraries, which would lead them to opt out en masse and make the feature useless. But there’s one stipulation about how we’re meant to use Steam Families that it seems like Valve knows is a futile ask.

“While we know that families come in many shapes and sizes, Steam Families is intended for a household of up to six close family members,” Valve wrote. “To that end, as we monitor the usage of this feature, we may adjust the requirements for participating in a Steam Family or the number of members over time to keep usage in line with this inten…

Morrigan isn’t just my favourite Dragon Age character, she’s the greatest fantasy RPG companion of all time

All this week we’re looking back on the best of the Dragon Age series, to celebrate its 15th anniversary. We’ve got loads of great Dragon Age opinions and retrospectives, and we’ll be adding more to the list in the days to come.

As the dust settles on PC Gamer’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard review, which describes a Marvel-i-fied action RPG let down by its new lacklustre, sanitised companion characters and clumsy storytelling, I feel the time has now come where we can finally step back, breathe and calmly recognise what should have been obvious to BioWare all along—in Morrigan, the Witch of the Wilds, Dragon Age has always boasted the fantasy RPG genre’s greatest of all time companion character. Because, 15 years after the series debuted with the peerless Dragon Age: Origins, not only h…
